Healthy Way of Eating With a Raw Food Diet

By Paul D Johnson

If you want a diet program wherein nutrients are fully intact and nothing has been taken away, raw food diet is the perfect choice. It's a kind of diet that is gaining popularity among health conscious people. It is mainly composed of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and beans that have never been cooked or heated. The principle of this diet is that some important nutrients are lost whenever a food is cooked so it is ideal to eat raw foods in order to preserve its nutrients.

In a raw food diet, the meals are not very hard to prepare. There are many kinds of vegetables around so the choice for your meals is limitless. It is recommended that the ingredients that will be used are organic, meaning there are no fertilizers or pesticides used in the process. Heating of food can be done as long as the heat does not exceed 116 F in order to avoid destruction of important nutrients. Other means of preparing the food can also be done like juicing, blending, grinding, soaking and dehydrating. Among the aforementioned methods of preparation, juicing is most preferred as a lot of recipes can be made using this process. Sometimes, fruits and vegetables are combined in juicing in order to hide the vegetable's unpleasant taste. In dehydration method, the fruit or vegetable is exposed to a controlled heat source and warm air is continuously blown. This makes the fruit or vegetable dried. The easiest method of preparation above all is serving the food raw, without applying any cooking techniques.

The benefits of this kind of diet are also good points to take note of. These include having a strong immune system, building stronger resistance to diseases. It also improves skin appearance because of the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables; weight loss as there are no excess fat that can be get from this diet; good digestion because raw fruits and vegetables are very rich in fiber; and reduced risk to diseases such as diabetes. Although these benefits are very promising to hear, this diet is not advisable to certain people. Children and pregnant or breastfeeding women should not be in this kind of diet as all of their needed nutrients may not be attained from it. People with bone problems are at risk as this diet has shown to lower bone density mass. Those who have anemia cannot also get their complete iron needs from this diet. And people who are malnourished may be able to get all their needed nutrients from this.

Raw Food Diet - Seven Reasons to Make the Switch to Eating Raw Food

By Kelly Cannon

Our prehistoric ancestors ate most of their food raw - vegetables, fruits, nuts and berries made up a great portion of the hunter/gatherer diet. But since we learned to use fire to cook our food, our diet has changed - people these days rarely eat anything raw, except maybe a salad alongside their steak. However, recently there has been more of a focus on healthy eating, and this has convinced many people that eating more raw foods is the way to go.

Here are some of the reasons that so many people are making the switch to raw food diets:

1. Foods are higher in nutritional value when they are eaten raw. When we cook foods, not only does it destroy vitamins, proteins and fat that we need, it actually breaks down the naturally occurring enzymes that would help us to digest the food.

2. You can maintain a healthy weight much easier with raw foods. We get full faster on a raw diet because the foods contain more water and fiber, so we eat less. Additionally, filling fruits and vegetables are lower in calories - so you can each as much as it takes to feel full without overdoing it.

3. Flavor! Foods have much more flavor in their raw state, so you can use less salt and spices.

4. It's simple to do - If you're tired of spending most of your evening after work in the kitchen preparing meals and cleaning up, you'll love how simple it is to prepare and clean up after a raw meal.

5. It's good for the environment - it encourages the use of organic and local produce, and leftovers can go on the compost pile.

6. It's better for you general health - raw foods don't contain the free radicals caused by cooking, so there is less risk of cancer. More fiber in your food leads to less digestive problems, and less incidence of colon cancers. And it is so rich in nutrition, it helps your body stay fit and working well, giving you more natural immunity against illnesses like colds and flu.

7. You can save money! Foods from the produce department are a lot cheaper than steaks and pork chops. You also won't need to buy as many pots and pans - and you might even save on your medical bills.

7 Benefits of a Raw Food Diet

By Matt Farr

Raw food diets are becoming increasingly popular. People are taking them up for all sorts of reasons and benefits they are associated to. Below is a quick summary of 7 such benefits.

Benefits

1. Higher enzyme levels - Enzymes enable life to exist; without them we would not be here. As we age our body becomes more and more depleted of enzymes and it is this depletion that is largely responsible for the aging process. The less we deplete our enzyme levels and the more we replenish them the healthier we remain. Cooking (above 118F) or processing food kills the enzymes in food. For this reason raw food offers huge benefits that cooked/processed food cannot. Specific vitamins and minerals are required for specific enzyme activity, meaning a diet high in vitamins and minerals will also help to maximize enzyme activity and counter enzyme depletion. Raw food has much higher levels of vitamins and minerals than cooked or processed foods.

2. More vitamins and minerals - We all know about the importance of vitamins and minerals to our health. When food is cooked (above 118F) or processed vitamins and minerals are significantly depleted from the food. Therefore raw food contains much higher quantities.

3. More antioxidants & phyto-nutrients - Phyto-nutrients or phyto-chemicals as they are also called are a classification of micronutrients found in food that we know little about but we do know that they have an important role in our health and in the successful absorption and utilisation of vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and carbohydrates. There are hundreds if not thousands of phyto-nutrients found in raw food which are largely destroyed by processing and cooking. Antioxidants provide us with protection against oxidative damage (free radical damage) and as with phyto-nutrients, antioxidant levels are significantly reduced by cooking and processing.

4. Less free radicals - Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an unpaired number of electrons, this makes them highly reactive. Once formed they can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. This can then lead to damage to the body (and your health) when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Free radicals alongside enzyme deficiencies are the main cause of the physical degeneration of the body. One of the most common causes of free radicals involves the interaction of oxygen with certain molecules. This process is known as oxidation. In this regard oxygen is both our friend and our foe. It keeps us alive and kills us at the same time. If you were to peel an apple and leave it out in the air, the process of oxidation is what turns it brown. The formation of rust on metal is another example.

We can reduce the amount of free radical damage (and thus the effects of aging and physical degeneration) by reducing our exposure to free radicals and increasing those things that neutralize free radical damage. Specific enzymes and antioxidants are the main means by which our bodies neutralize free radical damage. This is not to say that all free radical damage is always bad for our health, in some instances it is used by the body to our advantage i.e. by the immune system to combat infections. The aim should be to minimise our exposure to un-natural levels and support antioxidant and enzyme processes that keep it in check.

Processing and cooking increases the amount of free radicals in our food and reduces the content of enzymes and antioxidants in food. For this reason raw foods can play a significant role in reducing the aging process and physical degeneration.

5. Less rancid fats - Fats are extremely important to health. Our brain is largely made from fats, as are our hormones and the membrane of every cell in our body. They are also the most delicate of all nutrients and are easily damaged by light, heat and oxidation, particularly polyunsaturated fats. Cooking (particularly at high temperatures) and processing will therefore damage fats and render them rancid. The body will then use these rancid fats for numerous structural and functional roles within the body, but because they do not have the same properties as naturally occurring un-rancid fats this can cause a lot of problems. Over time the regular consumption of these fats can then lead to significant degeneration of the body. For this reason a diet focused around raw food will significantly reduce rancid fat consumption, help to maximise health and the incidence of degenerative disease.

6. Less denatured proteins - Much like fats, proteins can be damaged or denatured by heat and processing. They are more stable than fats but a damaged protein is just as harmful. Since proteins and fats are the main structural and functional macronutrients in our diet (carbohydrates are very rarely used for structural or functional (beyond energy) purposes in the human body), consuming denatured or rancid versions will not support good health and longevity when consumed in high quantities and can lead to all manner of health problems and disease states. Eating raw means you will be eating proteins that have been untouched by processing or heating at high temperatures and are not denatured in any way.

7. More life force energy - Life force energy, also known as qi, chi, prana, Ki (the term used depends upon the eastern culture you are referring to) is a term arising out of eastern medicine/health philosophies. Life force energy is an invisible energy we get from a host of sources, including our food. It plays a significant role in our health and vitality and more recently has been proven and measured using Kirlian photography. Measurements have been made with cooked, processed and raw foods, with raw foods showing significantly higher levels of life force energy of all food types. Cooked and processed foods are almost "dead" in terms of their life force energy.

These are just some of the main benefits, there are others. Check out my other articles for more benefits and also some of the challenges you may face following such a diet.

Benefits of a Raw Food Diet

By Yuri Elkaim

You know what the pitfalls are in a modern overly-prepared cooked food diet. You know all about saturated fats, processed sugars, and bad carbs. But do you know enough about the other side of the coin? If processed foods have so many negatives, what are the benefits of raw food?

Carbohydrates are on everyone's lips these days when it comes to talking about eating better. Simply put, carbohydrates are the sugars in food that your body breaks down with relative ease, and extracts for energy.

But it is far more complex than simply saying that carbs are good or bad, should be used a lot or completely avoided. There are, as with anything, good carbs and bad carbs. And in raw foods, there are many more examples of good carbs than you would find in cooked foods. Good carbohydrates are high in fibre, that will mean you feel fuller and for longer periods of time after eating them. Good carbs also have a low glycemic index rating, that is, they won't give you a jolt of sugars that your body will gobble down and run out of quickly, giving you that rollercoaster of energy effect.

Antioxidants are something that beauty commercials are always telling you about, but instead of rubbing a cream on your face, why not try filling your mouth with blueberries? As far as antioxidants go, blueberries are the most efficient provider. They contain a multitude of antioxidants, including phytonutrients like anthocyanidins and ellagic acid. These antioxidants will help your beauty regimen, to be sure by repairing the damage done to your collagen cells by aging or sun exposure, but they'll also keep your insides beautiful by fixing free radical damage to your heart and blood vessels, and reducing your chances of developing certain types of cancers.

Fatty acids might sound like a negative thing to ingest fats are bad, and acids are corrosive, right? Not in this case. Fatty acids like Omega-3 are used by the body to create new cells, and absorb certain vitamins like A, E and K, which are fat soluble, and maintain proper organ health my improving oxygen flow in the bloodstream. You can increase the levels of fatty acids in your system by eating cold-smoked salmon, or increasing your intake of greens and walnuts, which contain alphalinoleic acid, something your body cannot produce on its own.

Another important source of alphalinoleic and omega-3 fatty acids is chia seeds. Once used solely to grow sprout hair on terra cotta heads, these seeds are gaining a second life as a wonderful part of the raw foods diet. Chia seeds are incredibly easy to digest, meaning that their benefits are delivered very quickly to the body.

These are only a few of the many benefits of a raw food diet. Not only will you be eating better, healthier foods, you will be improving your overall health, aiding in permanent weight loss, and giving your brain the vitamins and nutrients it needs to stay alert and focused.

When eating a raw food diet you do not lose these enzymes that help you to make the best use of the nutrients they contain. Raw foods also retain a higher nutritional value compared to cooked foods. Foods that are cooked at temperatures above one hundred and sixteen degrees do not only lose enzymes, they much of their nutrient content.

There are many methods to cook raw foods and have them retain all of the things healthy for you. By using a blender, you can make many different shakes, smoothies and drinks from fruits and vegetables. You can purchase dried fruits at a local store. Dried fruits are a great addition to the raw food diet. These are not only tasty and sweet but are still packed full of vitamins and make a great snack.

Dehydration is another option for cooking when on the raw food diet. By dehydrating fruits and vegetables in a dehydrator, you can make many different recipes. Most people like seaweed once it is prepared by dehydrating it. Not only does it have an exotic flavor but can give you many important nutrients.

A thing to keep in mind is that with all the different methods to cook raw foods most of the recipes you make you will make from scratch. There are not prepackaged raw food diet packs that you can buy. This is mainly your responsibility to pick how and what you make. You will have to choose between recipes that you like and ones you do not but there are many raw food diet recipes and cookbooks.

There are many pluses to going on the raw food diet but there can some side effects as well. If you were a person that had meat in their diet along with junk food, you might experience a detoxifying effect as you begin a raw food regimen. As these toxins leave your body, you might have some stomachaches or headaches. Nevertheless, these are very mild and are not a serious medical problem. Your body just needs to readjust.

However, the plusses to eating for energy and starting on a raw food diet include reduced risks of cancer, diabetes and heart problems, weight loss, healthier skin and a general sense of well being. So, if you are looking to eat healthier or lose weight why not give the raw foods diet a try?

What Most People Think About a Raw Food Diet

By Yuri Elkaim

There are a lot of misconceptions about the raw foods diet. It sounds like such a radical departure from the average person's intake of food, that people make some crazy assumptions about what it means to eat raw. Here are some of the reactions you're likely to come across, and some information to counter that well-intentioned ignorance with.

"Nothing but raw foods? That must cost you a fortune!"

This is probably the reaction you're going to hear the most. There is this conception in our culture that you can eat for very little money, as long as your diet consists of nothing but foods with the words "nuggets" or "super sized" in them somewhere. And for the average sort who wants something a little healthier, you can throw a few of those expensive veggies on the side of the plate. But nothing but veggies must be expensive.

Ahh, but the raw foods diet is more than the sum of its parsley. Veggies and fruits alone do not a raw meal make and while fresh foods to tend to cost a little more than the canned and pre-cooked alternatives, it will actually be lower if you go with bulk produce, or about the same if you prefer higher end fresh food items. Oh, and don't forget to take into account the extra energy costs of running an oven!

"How do you ever find the time to do all of that prep work?"

Another common and frightening thought for most people. We are all so busy in our daily lives, that the idea of spending even one extra moment of our precious free time in the kitchen is abhorrent.

But when you stop to really think about it, how would a raw diet possibly mean more work in the kitchen? If you're not cooking anything, you have just dropped a very large step out of the preparation time of every single meal. The occasional blending and dehydration times will never compare to the cooking time on the stovetop or in the oven.

"That's fine for the short term, but you know you aren't getting all the nutrients you need, right? I mean, do you know about protein?"

It's amazing how many people, who know so little about good nutrition, will tell you so much about the unavoidable benefits of meat protein. Surely, a raw food diet will short-change you on a lot, right? Well, yes. A raw food diet means you will have a deficit of carcinogenic charring, fattening frying oils, and all the rich and varied sugars available in almost every single processed food item.
